What's My IP Address?

Why Check Your IP Address?
Knowing your public IP address can be useful for several reasons. Tooly explains:
- Network Setup: Configuring routers, firewalls, or remote access often requires your public IP.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnosing connection problems with online services or games.
- Geolocation Checks: Seeing what location services might associate with your IP address.
- Security Awareness: Understanding your digital footprint on the internet.
Tooly simply shows you the IP address your browser used to connect to this website!
What is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. Think of it like a digital street address for your device on the internet.
There are two main types:
- Public IP: The address assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and used to communicate with the wider internet. This is the address websites and online services see when you connect. Tooly shows this one!
- Private IP: An address used within your local network (e.g., home Wi-Fi). Devices on the same network use private IPs to talk to each other, but these aren't reachable from the public internet.
You might also see IPv4 (e.g., 192.0.2.1) and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8::1) formats. IPv6 was developed because the world ran out of unique IPv4 addresses!
